Kenya Safari with Kids: A Family Guide

How to plan a Kenya safari with children: the best parks and ages, family-friendly lodges, short drives, children's rates and what to pack, from a Nairobi safari team.

By the Javiva Adventures team · 2 Nov 2026 · 3 min read

A Kenya safari is one of the best trips you can take as a family. Children see lions, elephants and giraffes up close, learn about wildlife and conservation, and come home with stories they tell for years. With the right parks, short drives and a flexible private vehicle, it is easy and relaxed.

What age is best?

Children of all ages are welcome on our safaris. As a rough guide:

  • Under 5: possible, but keep drives short and choose lodges with space to play. A private vehicle lets you stop whenever you need to.
  • 6 to 12: the ideal age. Children are curious, enjoy spotting animals and can manage game drives of three to four hours.
  • Teenagers: can do everything adults do, including walking safaris and longer itineraries.

For gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda, the minimum age is 15, so it suits families with older teenagers.

The best parks for families

  • Masai Mara: big cats, elephants and, from July to October, the Great Migration. Game is easy to find, so children stay interested.
  • Amboseli: large elephant herds with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them, on open plains that are easy to see across.
  • Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha: rhinos and flamingos at Nakuru, and a boat ride among hippos at Naivasha. Both are short drives from Nairobi.
  • Nairobi: the elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre are favourites with children. See our Nairobi day tours.

Tips for a happy family safari

  • Choose a private safari. You set the pace, stop for breaks and return to the lodge when children are tired. See our private Kenya safaris.
  • Keep drives short. Combine parks that are close together, such as the Masai Mara with Lake Naivasha, instead of long road days.
  • Pick family-friendly lodges. Look for family rooms or tents, a swimming pool and early dinners.
  • Add the beach. A few days in Diani after the safari gives everyone time to relax. See our Kenya beach holidays.
  • Bring binoculars for each child, plus a simple animal checklist to tick off.

Children's rates

Children under 4 travel free. Children aged 4 to 7 pay 50% of the adult price, and children aged 8 to 13 pay 70%. From 14 years, the adult price applies. Full details are in our booking terms.

Health and safety

Speak to a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria protection for each child before you travel, and check the latest entry requirements for Kenya. On safari, children stay inside the vehicle during game drives and are accompanied by an adult at all times in the lodges. Many families also read our Kenya packing checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Kenya safari safe for children?

Yes, with sensible precautions. Children stay inside the vehicle on game drives, lodges are fenced or guarded, and your driver-guide is with you throughout. Speak to a travel clinic about health precautions before you go.

How long should a family safari be?

Four to seven days works well for most families. It allows two or three parks with short drives between them, and time to rest.

Do children pay the full safari price?

No. Children under 4 travel free, children aged 4 to 7 pay 50% and children aged 8 to 13 pay 70% of the adult price. From 14 years, the adult price applies.

Can we add a beach holiday?

Yes. Many families end their safari with a few days in Diani or Zanzibar. We can arrange flights or road transfers as part of your itinerary.
