The Ngorongoro Crater is a huge, intact volcanic caldera, around 600 m deep and 260 km² across. Its floor of grassland, swamp and lake supports a dense, year-round population of animals.
It is one of the best places in East Africa to see the endangered black rhino, along with lions, elephants, buffalo, hyenas and thousands of zebra and wildebeest.
