Samburu sits in Kenya's dry north, where the Ewaso Ng'iro river draws wildlife from miles around. The landscape of red earth, doum palms and rocky hills feels completely different from the southern parks.
It is the home of the "Samburu Special Five": Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich. You will not find most of them in the Mara or Amboseli.
What you'll do in Samburu National Reserve
- Game drives along the river, where elephants come to drink and bathe
- Look for the Samburu Special Five and the leopards that hunt along the riverbank
- Visit a Samburu village and meet the warriors and their families
- Guided bush walks with Samburu guides in the neighbouring conservancies
What to expect
- Hot, dry days and cool nights
- Excellent elephant and leopard sightings
- Fewer vehicles than the Mara, with a wilder, quieter feel
- Riverside lodges and tented camps shaded by acacia trees
